Job Title: Life Insurance Underwriter
Job Overview:
Contemporary Staffing Solutions is seeking a Life Insurance Underwriter to join our client to support the evaluation and approval of life insurance applications while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and high-quality decision-making. In this role, you will leverage your underwriting expertise to assess risk, apply sound judgment on complex cases, and maintain strong partnerships with clients across the life insurance industry. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a highly skilled underwriting team, stay current on evolving market trends, and play a key role in shaping underwriting strategies. This is a remote, contract opportunity.
Compensation:
$45 – $50/hour
Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, normal business hours
Key Responsibilities of the Life Insurance Underwriter:
Review and assess facultative reinsurance applications, evaluating medical, non-medical, and financial factors to determine insurable risk and ensure timely, accurate decisions.
Apply sound judgment and company guidelines to make independent underwriting determinations, documenting rationale clearly and providing justifications for decisions.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, mortality data, and competitor practices to ensure underwriting accuracy and market alignment.
Collaborate closely with client underwriters to deliver clear, value-driven communication, including explanations of underwriting decisions and prompt responses to inquiries.
Represent the organization at client meetings, industry events, and external reviews to promote strong relationships and uphold professional standards.
Mentor and co-sign cases for team members, contributing to knowledge sharing and ongoing professional development within the underwriting group.
Qualifications and Skills for the Life Insurance Underwriter:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
8–10 years of life insurance underwriting experience, ideally within brokerage or reinsurance environments.
Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and impaired/substandard risk assessment.
Professional designations such as ALMI, FLMI, AALU, FALU, or CLU preferred; commitment to continued professional education valued.
Proven ability to evaluate complex risk profiles, interpret EKGs, and apply advanced mortality risk analysis.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience interacting directly with clients, agents, or senior leadership.
Demonstrated initiative in improving processes, client relations, and underwriting efficiency.
